When To Go
Best Time to Visit
Zimbabwe can be visited any time of the year. The best game viewing time is in the dry season, May to October when animals congregate around the rivers and waterholes. This is especially true in Hwange where the artificially pumped waterholes attract many animals, including big herds of elephants. The best time to see Victoria Falls is from May through September.
Best Time to go on Safari
The very accessible Hwange National Park has great diversity and is excellent for good overall game viewing. In the dry season, big herds of elephants congregate here from the surrounding bush. Mana Pools National Park is an excellent off the beaten track destination and offers unrivalled wilderness to be explored by 4×4, on foot and by canoe.
The best time for game viewing is the dry winter months (April-October). Water is scarce especially at the end of the dry season and animals tend to congregate around water sources. Afternoon showers can be expected in the wet season (November-March).
The beautiful sable antelope is a Hwange special as well as brown hyena, bat-eared fox and springhare which inhabit the Kalahari sands of the region.
Best Time for Bird Watching
Zimbabwe has over 650 bird species and is an excellent birding destination. The country has no endemic birds, but several near-endemics can be found in the globally important Eastern Zimbabwe Mountains Endemic Bird Area (EBA). Migratory birds are present from November to April and the general number of birds is phenomenal.
Zimbabwe offers the best birdwatching in the wet season from November to April. At this time, migratory birds are present and all species are in full breeding plumage. The scenery is lush and at it most beautiful, but this isn’t the best time for general wildlife viewing.
